Wilma grew up with 21 siblings. Having a large family proved to be helpful because they were able to "massage" her leg muscles giving her the ability to relax and grow strength which gave her the opportunity to walk again.  

Her parents were also an important part of her life. Her father very competitive and pushed her to do her absolute best. When Wilma was finally able to walk, her father urged her to run at least a mile every day. Wilma's mom wanted to make sure she was healthy, taking her to many doctor and physical therapy appointments ensuring she would be able to walk again. 

In 1960, Wilma Rudolph was the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics.
